Atlanta Real Estate Agent Shares the Name of his Favorite Flooring Contractor

Sunday, June 6th, 2010

My wife Anne Lackey and I have renovated dozens of home in the past ten years.  The home almost always gets new flooring.  Sometimes we use pre-finished engineered wood, sometimes it is vinyl, other times we put down tile and in every home goes some carpet.

For our rental home we have used a base grade of carpet over the years and am now transitioning to a vinyl product that looks like wood and is installed in planks. It is similar to those Pergo type flooring products only the base isn’t a masonite type substance that can expand if it gets wet.

In the last major high end renovation we put Bruce engineered wood flooring on the entire first level, plush heavy pile carpet up stairs in the bedrooms and a smooth commercial type carpet in the terrace level.  The master bathroom received travertine tile on the floors and in the wet areas.  The travertine even extends into the walk-in closet in the master bath area.

Nearly everyday we are involved in the repairs and maintenance of the rental homes we own and those we manage for others.  ‘Turnkey’ is the term we use for the work to be done when a tenant moves out to get the home ready for the next tenant.  Very often the carpet that has a 5-7 year life needs replacing and sometimes vinyl gets torn when the tenant moves the stove, washer or refrigerator.

When we do a turnkey or renovation to resell we always depend on one guy to handle the flooring.  That guy is Rob Lowder, the owner of Floor Creations. He has the best folks working for him from the person that come to measure to the crews who come to install your selection.

Rob has a showroom on the east side of town but don’t worry, they will bring the showroom to you so you can select the perfect color for your home in the comfort of your home.  They service all over Metro Atlanta.  You can reach Rob at 770-918-0043 and tell him Mark sent you.  Check them out at www.atlantahousingsource.com/

Atlanta Rentals Need Appliance Repair – Meet Our Appliance Guy Bob

Monday, May 31st, 2010

Appliances use to be made to last. They were heavy and clunky.  They were a pain to move but kept on ticking.  Now days, appliances both big and small seem to be made to use until they break and then you throw them away and buy a newer model.

If you are like Anne and me, we hate to put stuff in the landfill so we try to repair rather than pitch.  We use to try to handle the repairs of the bigger items like microwaves, washers, dryers, stoves, dishwashers and refrigerators ourselves.

Armed with the make and model number we would head to the local parts house for the part that seemed to be broken.  Many times we were wrong about which part it was and it took multiple trips to the parts house.

We soon learned that we should leave the repairs up to a professional. We tried the national named repair guy but soon found out they were too costly and the wait time to get someone dispatched was days. Then they would only schedule to be there in the am or the pm.

I couldn’t sit half a day missing work to wait in the national repair guy so we sought out a local guy we could trust.  We had to look no further that a guy in our church that had his own appliance repair business.  This guy took good care of us and of the homeowners we refer to him.

This guy is Bob Rape and his business in Rape Appliance.  Bob can be reached at 770-715-0735.  He is the fairest guy I know. If it shouldn’t be fixed and should be replaced he will tell you and you only get the service call charge.  He doesn’t gouge you and then tell you it cant be fixed.

Now that I’ve told you about him you may want to know he is a small business owner and may not serve every crook and corner of Metro Atlanta, but I suggest you call him before the national firms and see if he can help.  He is fair with his pricing and the service is always great. Tell him Mark sent you.

Does Your Dog Need A Home Away from Home When Your Away?

Monday, May 31st, 2010

If you have dogs like Anne and I do you want the best care for them when you travel.  Our two four legged kids, Mason and Lexie, get top dog treatment at home and when we are away. They stay at Camp Woof in Norcross on Buford Highway when we travel.

The folks at Camp Woof really care about our pets as if they were their own.  The facility is about a year old and has all the latest amenities.  Mason and Lexie stay in a luxury suite with a video camera so mom can look in on them any time she is lonely and misses them.  When they go to group play with the other dogs, again mom can watch them on a closed circuit video camera that she can view on her laptop or phone.

The staff members really love dogs and take special care to log all the special details for our dogs stay. Mason gets fed four times a day and medicine twice a day due to a medical condition.  Lexie has a special food she eats and must be separated from her big brother Mason during feeding times or Mason will eat all her food leaving her hungry.

Camp Woof also has a retail front where they sell many varieties of pet foods and the toys and pet paraphernalia are too numerous to list.  They even order special booties for our Lexie to help deal with slick floors.  I can’t say enough about the place and the people there.

They even have doggie day care if you need to have a place for your dog to stay and play while you are at work.  Call Hans at 770-558-6100 and check them out on the web. You can even see the dogs for yourself on the public cams. It is fascinating to watch!
